Once, while walking in the great city of Mumbai, in India, I saw this girl waiting at a bus stop.
My attention was drawn by the contrast between the girl and the environment, or more precisely: by the contrast between the dirt at the bus stop and the beauty of the girl’s pink dress.
The pink dress is nice, but it is nothing exceptional. It is revealed by the dirt around it, which emphasizes its beauty. The gray all around helps to focus on the pink, like darkness allows to “see” – if I can say so – the strength of the light from a lit candle in the obscurity.
Looking at the same candle under a summer sun at noon would result in an impossibility to see its flame and its capacity to propagate light. Nobody would really pay attention to it.
It makes me think about the actual state of the world. It will not be a surprise if I said that the tremendous scientific and technical progress humanity made in the past centuries, is negatively balanced by the loss of human values. Empathy, generosity and compassion, to name only a few of them, seem to have vanished from our daily environment.
The so called “world leaders” are the first to be held responsible for this situation, as they continuously show through their conduct, and without any shame, that these values are totally alien to them. Most of them should thus not be considered as “leaders” in any sense, because a person who constantly demonstrates lack of basic human qualities cannot be considered qualified to lead humanity towards a better future.
Each day it becomes more obvious that we have entered into a new dark period in History. We shall overcome it, as History is made of cycles, and this is just another “middle-age” in the History of Humanity. It is not the first one, and I believe it will not be the last one.
Does it means that all we can do is to wait patiently for this cycle to end ? It could take quite a long time…. the last “middle-age” in Europe lasted around 1000 years! So what should we do? I believe we cannot restore human values by non-ethical means: darkness is fought by light, not by darkness. Death and Ignorance are defeated by Life and Education. Unconsciousness is eradicated by Consciousness.
So can we really do something? It may seem that we are so small in the face of such a huge challenge, like Perseus facing Medusa, like Herakles considering his “12 works”, like Theseus entering the labyrinth to face and kill the Minotaur.
But it is in our smallness that resides our strength. Just like a single candle can make much more of a difference in the darkness then when it is surrounded by light, our voice, our actions, our ethics and our human values will be seen and can make a difference for anyone around us, walking in obscurity searching for a light.Back to Gallery
