I am very fond of places, like the subway – here in the Metro in Paris – where there is often the opportunity to take pictures showing a great combination of people, and reflect them in windows, glasses, and mirrors.
When we look at photographs, they sometimes offer us a scene which seems to break the reality, and it takes us a moment to process what our eyes see. Is the image of the woman on the right a reflection? Is she inside another train standing just near?
It is like a mind game, a kind of labyrinth. The answer by itself is not so important, but what matters is to ask the question, and to consider that our senses can be fooled and reality is not always as it appears… just like being in the Cave of the Platonic Myth. Appearances are all around. Knowing this is the first step, as it gives us perspective in relation to our own certitude.
